GOLF WEDGES AND THE SHORT GAME OF GOLF
The short golf game falls 150 yards and below towards the flagstick. Golfers with a good short game are generally known to have a better overall golf game and skillset. The common saying of "Drive to Show" and "Putt for Dough" rings true to this topic due to the accuracy and consistency required to master the golf short game.
Known as "scoring clubs", wedges are part of the iron family but are generally categorized separately. Placed in their own category, wedges are also specialized irons due to the specific functions they are used for in a golf's short game. Golf wedges are precision instruments designed to help you achieve the accuracy and the specific distance you need to get to the flagstick.
Therefore, the more accurate the club is, the more consistent and reliable your shots become. Since consistency is the key to any golf game, the more easily you are able to predict and plan each of your shots with accuracy, the better the golf player you will become.
This is the main philosophy and manufacturing ideology behind Akagi Golf Wedges. They are painstakingly hand-calibrated with precision to help you achive that specific goal of accuracy and consistency of every shot you take. Read more on the loft and swing guide for consistent and accurate shots.
Wedges are divided into four types:
Pitching Wedge- Even though it has "wedge" in its name, the Pitching Wedge is usually categorized with the other irons because a regular set of irons sold off the shelf would typically include a 3-iron through to a Pitching Wedge. The pitching wedge normally has loft of 47º to 50º degrees and is used primarily for fuller shots into greens and some longer chip shots.
Gap/Approach Wedge- As the name suggests, a Gap Wedge is used to fill the "gap" between a Pitching Wedge and a Sand Wedge. A typical Gap Wedge has a 50° to 52° loft and can be used similarly to a Pitching Wedge but it offers more opportunities from the fairway and around the green. Generally used by experienced golf players, a gap/approach wedge is sold separately as a 3-club set (Gap, Sand and Lob Wedge) due to it's specific accuracy/distance required.
Sand Wedge- Sand Wedges fall between 54° and 56° lofts. Specifically used to hit shots out of greenside bunkers, these kinds of shots requires a high degree of accuracy from the club especially for players who want to improve on their Sand/Bunker shots. The Sand Wedge is typically sold with the 3-club set (Gap, Sand and Lob Wedge.)
Lob Wedge- Typical Lob Wedges fall between the range of 58° and 60° lofts. As the name suggests, the function of a Lob Wedge is to allow a player to lob the golf ball high into the air with the intention of it falling directly on to the green with a minimal amount of roll. One of the more popular wedges, The Lob Wedge can effectively assist shots in the deep rough and sand more than other wedges with less loft. The Lob Wedge is also sold with the 3-club set (Gap, Sand and Lob Wedge)
